Odaiko
New England (ONE) is a performing group that weaves the traditional
elements of taiko with contemporary influences to create a constantly
evolving and dynamic art form. Our mission statement speaks to that
commitment, and our artistic vision flows directly from our mission
statement:
“Odaiko
New England (ONE), at the forefront of creativity and excellence
in the living art form of American taiko, harnesses the transformative
power of the Japanese drum through performance and education to
bring diverse communities together, promote positive images of Asian
American culture, and celebrate our multicultural society.”
Rhythm
is a way to seek a connection between the individual and the "universe".
In ancient times, drumming was in the provenance of individuals
revered and valued in the community: shamans, elders, and priests.
These “keepers” of the rhythm were important members of the community,
who were consulted upon for truth , healing, advice, and often for
a look into the future.
Concepts such as flow and pulse, revealed in rhythm, had an important
place in the lives of ancient cultures. Witness the celebration
of the cycles of nature, birth and death, and the role of rhythm
as rituals to mark these events. Odaiko New England, as “keepers
of rhythm”, seeks to revitalize the importance of culture and music
in community building through our continued quest for innovation
and excellence in creating the new tradition of American taiko.
We believe...
- that taiko is a powerful voice and instrument
that can be used to create harmony in our community.
- in learning about taiko and respecting
taiko traditions.
- in infusing the traditions of taiko with
other musical influences and artistic disciplines to create a
unique, contemporary and distinct Odaiko New England style.
- that taiko as a performance art is connected
to, and an important part of the Asian American community.
- in diversity within our group.
We are...
- a group that uses taiko to promote positive
images of Asian American culture.
- a group that performs throughout Boston
and the Northeast to foster enjoyment and appreciation of the
art of taiko.
- a group that engages the community through
education and interaction.
- a group that uses taiko to promote greater
cross-cultural understanding.
